e2e, or Entry to Employment, is a free programme
of learning aimed primarily at 16-18 year olds who are not in
education, training or employment. The programme provides young
people with the skills, qualifications, opportunities and, just
as importantly, the confidence to progress towards entering employment,
further education (level 2) or formal training (Apprenticeship).
e2e is also a fantastic way of removing the isolation experienced
by some young people who don’t find a job on leaving school.
Students get the chance to meet new people, share experiences
and make new friends. They also get a taste of the world of work
through work placements.
Since e2e was introduced in 2003, over 100,000 young people
have benefited from the e2e experience. Funded by the Learning & Skills
Council, all eligible young people are guaranteed a place on
an e2e programme.
The programme is dynamic, and tailor-made for the individual – their
interests, needs and aspirations. It addresses three strands;
basic and key skills, vocational training and social and personal
skills. No two e2e experiences are the same.
Students receive an initial assessment to discover what training
would be best for them and formulate their unique programme.
After care is also an important part of e2e; students are given
every opportunity to progress and achieve their goals.
While there is no specific time period over
which the programme must be completed, there is a minimum of
16 hours per week required study. This builds up to a maximum
of 30 hours, which students are encouraged to attend as soon
as possible.

Beneast has its own designated e2e learning centre in Stanley
Road, Blackpool. Much of the training will take place there.
Some of the learning will be based in local workplaces – these
could be outside, as well as in offices.
For the actual training, students are taught as adults on
a one-to-one basis, or in small groups. It’s not at all
like school!
The Education Maintenance Allowance, or EMA, is payable for
students on the e2e learning programme. This pays £10, £20
or £30 per week depending on circumstances to cover costs
of travel and learning materials. Bonuses are paid for students
who make recognisable progress.
Beneast automatically helps eligible students apply for EMA
once they sign on to the e2e programme. Once approved, EMA will
continue to be paid as long as the student attends.
Employers offering a young person work experience benefits
from their willingness to learn and a free pair of hands.
It’s also a great way of assessing a young person’s
potential for recruitment and trialling them at no cost to their
business.
